Knowing when it's time to split

My gardens have become these wild jungles of perennials. They represent my decorating style of the last 10 years...Yes! I love it! I'll take it!

Okay, so I love color. I also love order, and there is something so irresistible about those perfectly grown, neatly in their pot, beautifully blooming greenhouse plants! However...as my quest is to make more conscious decisions...sorting through what I have and re-creating it...I am drawn to my own turf and am learning how to split my perennials.

It has been a great way to re-unite with neighbors because I have more than enough to share. I am told that this how people used to do things...split and share what they had. Hmm...what a great idea!

So if you have a garden that is spilling over...consider making a split and either spreading it out into another space or sharing with a friend. Since I am not an expert at this, here are some sites you might want to check out: http://www.backyardgardener.com/linda/split.html; http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/gf_annuals_perennials/article/0,,DIY_13831_2271379,00.html;
